Additional Auto Insurance Policy Types

There are several additional types of auto insurance available. These policies give you the right coverage depending on the car you’re driving, your driving record, or how you want to use your car. These other policy types are:

  • Classic Car Insurance: An auto insurance policy for collectible cars that are 25 years or older that provides coverage for the value of the vehicle if it’s damaged or stolen.
  • Teen Driver Insurance: A policy that specializes in teen drivers, Typically, these plans cost more than a typical auto insurance plan but can lower in price over time as your child builds a safe driving record. Not all insurance carriers like teen drivers, so we’ll help you find one that does.
  • Rideshare Insurance: Additional Insurance for drivers that are using their personal car to work for companies like Uber or Lyft. More on this later.
  • Roadside Assistance: Coverage to help give you comfort knowing that you can get assistance if your vehicle ever breaks down. This includes assistance with towing, jump starts, locking yourself out of the car, running out of gas, and more.
  • SR22: Also known as high-risk insurance, this certificate proves to the state that you have purchased auto insurance and is intended for drivers who have been in too many accidents, received too many speeding tickets, and/or have been arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI).
  • Pet Injury Coverage: This coverage is offered as part of your collision coverage with some carriers. It will help cover the cost of veterinarian bills should your cat or dog be injured in a covered loss.

Auto Insurance Coverages:

Collision Coverage

Collision coverage is commonly seen as the first component that makes up an auto insurance policy. As you may assume from the name, this coverage is for damages that occur to your vehicle when involved in a collision with another vehicle or an object that causes damage to your vehicle. Other damages that happen to your car that are not related to a collision fall under comprehensive coverage, which is purchased separately.

Some examples when collision coverage can be used include:

  • If a driver is required to swerve their vehicle to avoid a pedestrian or another vehicle and consequentially collides with an object on the side of the road such as a tree, light pole, traffic sign, etc.
  • When driving in icy and cold hazardous conditions, and the car loses traction and slides into an object.
  • Damage that can occur from driving into a pothole on the road.

Comprehensive Coverage

To protect your car from non-collision-related events, you will need comprehensive coverage. This coverage is the second main component that makes up the physical damage portion of auto insurance. This coverage is an optional add-on to your policy unless you are financing the vehicle.

Comprehensive coverage provides “unforeseen events” that can happen to your car that is unrelated to a collision with another vehicle. Some examples of claims can include, but are not limited to:

  • Hitting a deer or other animal which ends up damaging your car.
  • Having part of a building, like a brick or heavy shingle, fall off and hit your car. (Falling objects)
  • Damages caused by somebody breaking into your car and sometimes stealing something that is part of your car, but not a loose personal possession (this should instead be covered by your home insurance policy). Similarly, vandalism is also commonly included and can cover somebody keying your car, slashing your tires, or any other intentional damage to your vehicle.
  • Damages to your car caused from natural weather such as flooding, hail, or a windstorm.

Even though you might sign up for comprehensive coverage, this still means that you are still responsible for your own car. Any intentional or criminal damages you do to your car yourself will not be covered.

Liability Coverage

Liability coverage is the final component that makes up an auto insurance policy and is the one that is a requirement in order to drive in every state. Similar to how collision coverage covers your vehicle in an accident, liability coverage is used to pay for any damages that you are found liable for in an accident.

Liability coverage is typically broken down into three categories with each category having its own maximum liability limit. They are bodily injury per person (the max amount of money covered for each individual injured), bodily injury per accident (Max amount of money covered for all individuals injured in the accident), and property damage per accident (max amount of money covered for the other person’s vehicle or property).

Each state has its own minimum liability limit that you must carry, however, it is a wise choice to carry more than the minimum. This is because if you were to get into an accident while carrying the minimum and end up exceeding it, then you would be responsible for covering the difference out of pocket, whereas carrying more than the minimum might allow you to be totally covered.

Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UMBI & UMPD)

In the event, you get into an accident that is not your fault and where you and/or your passengers find yourselves injured, then the other person’s liability coverage would cover the injuries and damage to your property. However, even though it’s illegal, some individuals choose to not carry liability coverage.

As a safety net, uninsured motorist coverage is an add-on to your auto insurance policy that would help protect you from uninsured motorists by helping cover medical expenses, lost wages, and more. It can also help you with a hit-and-run scenario too since the outcome of the situation is almost identical; you have another driver who is unable to cover the liability of the accident, this time because they ran off.

On top of encountering an uninsured motorist, you can also run into an underinsured motorist. As the name implies, this is a driver who has liability coverage, but just not enough to meet your state’s minimum limit. This can be because they chose low property damage limits, or perhaps they are an out-of-state driver, and the limit in their home state is less than your state’s.

Either way, Underinsured Motorist Coverage would protect you if you were to find yourself in an accident with one of these individuals.

Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage will cover the damages to your vehicle should you be struck by an uninsured motorist. You will be sure to want to select property damage limits that cover the value of your vehicle to ensure that you’re compensated if your vehicle is a total loss.

Auto Insurance Deductibles

For auto insurance, you are responsible for paying an out-of-pocket fee called a deductible each time you file an insurance claim. After you pay it (assuming the damages are covered in your policy and the claim is approved), then your insurance carrier will then cover the rest of the damages.

An example could be if you get into an accident, and it will cost $3,000 to repair your car, and you have a deductible of $500. You would pay the $500 deductible, and your insurance carrier will cover the $2,500 remaining.

When you sign up for a policy, you have the choice to sign up for either a lower deductible or a higher deductible that can typically range from $100 – $2,000. If you were to pick a lower deductible, then you will pay less for each claim you file, but you can expect to pay a higher rate for your car insurance.

The opposite is true if you wanted to pay a higher deductible. The average deductible usually ranges around the $500 mark, but there is no right or wrong price tag. You should choose one that creates a good balance of affordability and coverage and are comfortable paying if you ever needed to file a claim.

Also, consider how often you may see yourself filing a claim. If you have a long safe-driving record with little to no accidents, then maybe a higher deductible might be a better choice for you. If you see yourself needing to make claims more often than the average person, then choose a smaller deductible so you don’t pay as much out of pocket. But remember, the lower the deductible, the higher the monthly premium.

Why Do You Need Auto Insurance

Besides auto insurance being required in every state, owning a car is unpredictable, and without proper insurance can become a huge money pit. Driving on the road and even leaving your car parked in public is a huge risk. You must worry about other drivers not paying attention, hazardous road conditions, pedestrians, and more.

Without proper insurance, you risk spending thousands of dollars on repairs. If you are found liable for somebody else’s injuries or damages to their property because of your driving, then you open the chance of receiving subrogation from their insurance providers.

Auto insurance shouldn’t be considered optional.  Insuring your car can save you a substantial amount of money and time if things ever go south. Also, if you are planning on financing a new car, then most likely either the bank you got your loan from or the dealership you got a lease from will require you to carry auto insurance.

Rideshare Insurance

If you plan on using your car to make some extra money on the side by working for a rideshare company like Uber or Lyft, consider signing up for rideshare insurance first. In most cases, your standard auto insurance policy will not cover this type of driving, which is why you’ll need to get this specialized form of insurance.

This policy is geared to help fill in the gaps of the Transportation Network Company’s insurance plan which typically provides coverage while the driver is on the app and has accepted a ride, but not in between rides.

Does the car I drive affect my auto insurance rate?

Yes, it does. There are many factors that play a role in how much your car insurance will cost. An exotic and expensive car will typically cost a lot more to insure than an traditional sedan type car because it can be more to repair if it gets damaged. Cars with large engines or sporty/muscle cars can cost more, especially if the driver has a record of speeding. Large cars can also affect it too because the insurance company can see that car causing more damage to another person’s vehicle or property.

Does the amount of miles I drive affect my auto insurance?

The more you drive, the higher the chances become of you getting in an accident. This means that if you drive frequently because you have a long work commute or travel often  then you can expect to pay a higher premium for your policy. If you don’t drive that often, then that might help you save money on your insurance plan. Some carriers offer low-mileage plans which give discounts on premiums, but rarely charge more for high mileage drivers.
